Description
Florida Shrimp Pie is a savory dish that combines fresh shrimp, a rich custard-like filling, and vibrant vegetables, all nestled in a flaky pie crust. This dish embodies the flavors of the coast and Southern hospitality.
Ingredients
1.5 lbs Fresh Florida Shrimp
1 (9-inch) Deep-Dish Pie Crust
1.5 cups Sharp Cheddar Cheese
1 medium Bell Pepper, diced
1 small Yellow Onion, finely diced
3 cloves Garlic Cloves, minced
1/2 cup Heavy Cream
2 Large Eggs, room temperature
1/2 cup Mayonnaise
1 tbsp Cajun Seasoning
2 tbsp Fresh Parsley, chopped for garnish
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). If using a store-bought frozen crust, let it thaw slightly according to package directions
- Blind-bake the crust for about 8 minutes to prevent it from getting soggy
- Melt a tablespoon of butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add diced onions and bell peppers; sauté until the onions are translucent
- Add minced garlic during the last minute of sautéing, then remove from heat
- Chop large shrimp into bite-sized pieces and season lightly with Cajun seasoning
- In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, mayonnaise, and heavy cream until smooth, adding remaining Cajun seasoning and a pinch of black pepper
- Spread the sautéed vegetables evenly across the bottom of the pre-baked crust, layer the seasoned shrimp over it, and sprinkle the shredded cheese on top
- Pour the egg and cream mixture slowly over the filling, allowing it to settle
- Bake for 35 to 45 minutes until the center is set and the top is golden brow
- Let the pie rest for at least 10 minutes before slicing
Notes
Pat shrimp dry before using to avoid excess moisture.
Do not overcook shrimp in the skillet; they will finish cooking in the oven.
Use high-quality, full-fat mayonnaise for best results.
